A New Beginning and a Fresh Start

For me September has always been the real "New Year" - a time for fresh resolutions about getting organized, getting better grades and getting things done. Store aisles are filled with the promise of fresh starts- new paper, pencils and pens. How can we not succeed? You know the saying about the best laid plans of mice & men... I guess that's why there are fresh new erasers too!

Privacy Playground: The First Adventure of the Three CyberPigs

In this game, designed for ages 8-10, the CyberPigs play on their favourite Web site and encounter marketing ploys, spam and a close encounter with a not-too-friendly wolf.

The purpose of the game is to teach kids how to spot online marketing strategies, protect their personal information and avoid online predators.

The accompanying Teacher's Guide explains how to play the game, gives background information on the issues of online marketing, spam and children's privacy and provides activities and handouts for classroom use.

Is my Child Gifted?

Unwrapping the Gifted , by Tamara Fisher, is a great article that helps sorts out what gifted is, and what gifted isn't. The author also gives us a peek into what gifted education is all about. Children who are gifted, simply learn differently from their peers. Gifted children do not always get high marks or complete their homework, because they require a different type of teaching to help them succeed.
Take a look at Unwrapping the Gifted, it's an enjoyable light read and explains this topic well, without the usual jargon.

Writing a Procedure

A procedure is a set of directions, written to help a reader complete a task. If the procedure is written correctly, the reader's results will usually be the same as the author's results.

A procedure has the following parts:

Purpose
(What the author is trying to teach you to do-often the title)

Materials list
(What you must have to follow the directions)

Sequential list of steps
(How to do it-sometimes numbered)

Diagrams
(Pictures that help explain the materials, steps, and results.)

Linking words
(Words telling the order -first,next,now,finally)

Subject specific words
(Words for the topic-cooking=stir, roast, brown)

Results
(What you get in the end, what to do with it and any cautions-
directions=Our home is the red brick house on the corner.
Knock loudly on the front door, the back door is for the people
who live downstairs.)

Dubai ruler makes big donation

The Burj al-Arab is a large boat-shaped hotel - people even play tennis on its helipad.

Dubai is one of the seven states that make up the country United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The World and The Palm Islands are huge islands being built off of the coast of Dubai.

Each state has its own ruler.

He feels that education and research have to be improved in the UAE for the region to have a bright future.

There are almost 300 shops in a very tiny area, displaying more than 25 tonnes of gold at any time.

Dubai has been making news with some of its innovative real-estate projects.

So each shop, on the average, is displaying a person's weight in gold!

The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, is donating ten billion dollars for education in the Middle East.

Sheikh Mohammed himself has helped create many of these.

A picture, taken from outer space, of one of the palm islands being built shows that it really does look like a palm tree.

Some of the other states are Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Dubai's "Gold Souk" is a market where gold is sold almost like fish being sold in a fish market.

The ruler of Dubai happens to be both the Prime Minister and Vice-President of the UAE.

They are actually in the shape of the continents and palm trees.
